How to measure your dog for a coat

Dogs come in all different shapes & sizes so here’s a quick guide to measuring them.

Whippets, Greyhounds and Lurchers

Sighthounds and long dogs are slightly different from other breeds as their coats are hooded and their backs are shaped.
These coats will sometimes have a lead slot for when the hood is worn up.

The picture below shows a 55cm or 22" whippet coat.
As you can see there is no easily visible place that the 22" measurement is taken from.

Instead, the size measurement corresponds with the measurement from just below the dogs collar to the base of their tail.

It's more important to ensure that the fit is snug for dogs, rather than bitches. If the coat is too big on a dog then the strap will sit too far back and interfere with him having a wee.
In contrast, with bitches you can go half a coat size too large to get better coverage without causing them any difficulty.

You may wish to consider a coat like the Whippet Extreme or Greyhound / Lurcher Extreme for a dog who is troubled by straps on dog coats. With this type of coat the underbelly strap fastens around the back of the ribcage so it is well suited for dog hounds.
The fit of coats with chest pieces should always be correct. If the underbelly strap is too loose then the chest piece may hang too low. If the underbelly strap is too tight then there may not be enough slack in the coat for a dog to run about in it without the coat feeling too tight on the dog.

If your whippet, greyhound or sighthound measures inbetween two sizes then consider their build.

If your sighthound or longdog is relatively broad or muscular in his or her shoulders, perhaps a very fit dog or a larger built lurcher, then this can "take up" a little of the coats length. You may want to order the size up.
Conversely, if a dog is slightly built, perhaps a Saluki or Saluki cross lurcher or a slight Beddlington-whippet
then a coat will sit a little further back and you may want to order the size down.

Straight Backed Dogs

Next we will look at dogs with straight backs like terriers, Spaniels, Labs, Dachshunds and the hound below.

Find your dog's withers. It's the point just below the collar at the base of the neck.
Measure from here to the base of his tail and this provides the coat measurement.

Dog coats increase by size in 5cm or 2" increments.

For straight backed dog, the coat size (eg 50cm or 20") is the measurement of the coat along the back seam.

If your dog measures inbetween two sizes then consider their build.
If your dog is relatively broad in his or her shoulders or chunky in build, then this can "take up" a little of the coats length and you may want to order the size up.
Conversely, if a dog is slightly built then a coat will sit a little further back and you may want to order the size down.

Typical Dog Coat Sizes By Breed

Average Jack Russel - 35cm /14" but a small bitch 30cm/12" or a larger Parsons 40cm/16"

Miniature Dachshunds Average 35cm / 14", small bitch 30cm / 12" and larger dogs 40cm / 16"

Small Spaniels 45cm / 18", Average Springers 50cm / 20", Larger Spaniels 55cm / 22"

Pointers and Vizlas - Small 55cm /22" up to 70cm / 28" for the largest

Average Whippet 50cm/20" but a smaller bitch might take a 45cm/18" coat whilst a larger  dog might need a 55cm/22" coat.

Average Greyhound 65cm or 70cm, smaller bitch 60cm /24" whilst the big Greyhound dogs can reach 80cm or 32"
